Canon point: Before Mustang’s coup d’etat
Background: World information
Constance was born in West City of Amestris, her father was a State Alchemist who’s skill was with water. He didn’t mind it when Constance was in his lab with him, his young daughter learning the trade from him. When she wasn’t playing with alchemy she would assist her mother in the garden or in the hospital tending to the wounded. Most of her childhood with the exception of occasional riots was spent learning, her parents pushing her into learning what she wanted to.
When she was five her father took her to Central with him when he had to go in for an evaluation. Constance got separated from him ending up watching other Alchemists with their state exams. She decided then and there she wanted to take the test when she was old enough to be just like her father. When he found her a few hours later she was curled up in the library an introductory alchemy book open on her lap.
When she was ten she managed to transmute things on her own for the first time, it was just a small figure of a fish, but it impressed her father, who stepped up her training seeing she actually had some skill. As long as she kept her grades up in school she was allowed to learn alchemy as well, if her grades ever dropped her father would stop lessons in order to get her to get the grades back up. Constance worked hard in both classes and her Alchemy lessons determined to make sure she could use alchemy, but wouldn’t have to rely on it only to survive. Her mother continued to teach her medical skills, and herbs to help tend to illnesses, which became the way she decided to encrypt her journal when it came to alchemy, she hid formulas within sketches of plants they used feeling it would be hard to decipher.
At twelve a skirmish got too close to her hometown. Constance was helping in the hospital when soldiers came in demanding her mother to go to help on the front line. Constance went along with them hoping to help. The soldiers balked a little about bringing the young girl with them. She got separated in the camp from her mother, finding that her father had been asked to join the fight as well.
Together the pair of alchemists were able to keep the insurgents from Creta back. Needing to draw the array to use her alchemy and wait to draw water left her open long enough for one of the soldiers to shoot through her arm damaging it to the point she either could replace it with automail which would have given her more physical strength, or wear a brace that would hinder her a little, she opted the brace not wanting to risk not being able to use alchemy because there was metal in the way, even though she knows that wouldn’t really be the case.
Constance’s refusal of automail was mostly because of the element she uses when it comes to her Alchemy. She felt that it would be more of a pain having to deal with rust all the time than just toughing it out when it came to her arm. As long as she could still use the said arm she was determined not to have it replaced.
She tested at seventeen showing off by drawing enough water to form a man sized orb in the desert, using it to put out flames that were started by some fireworks accidentally, saving the life of a few kids, it managed to impress enough people to draw attention to her. In return she was given her State rank. Her knowledge of herbs as well as her Alchemy, gave her a skill set best used for subtle missions instead of front line combat. She was pulled aside for special training, becoming an assassin, taking out opposition for King Bradley without making waves.
This special training earns her the nickname Toxin, mostly because it amused Bradley. She's hidden her pocket watch as a pendant covered with watery elements, partly so if she is caught during a mission she can keep her involvement with the military secret, as she was ordered. Though in a pinch she will alert the military that she is in a region, if she lets it be known she’s there it’s usually because she’s throwing her weight around in order to get someone medical attention or to save lives.
She hated the idea of having to kill, but was always told that if she didn’t her target would kill many innocent people. Being young and a little naive she went along with it knowing that with each person she killed she was staining her hands more red, Constance never killed without an order, and always tried to hide the fact she was State Alchemist, people just thought of her as a traveler when she came into a town.
On one of her missions she found out that her parents were murdered. The letter she received about it said that they were killed by enemy forces from Creta, Constance made her way home, where an attempt on her life was made by another alchemist. Constance escaped leaving her watch behind to make it look like she had been killed in the explosion. No one thought to really look and she managed to slip into the civilian population.
In her travels she found that something was off, without Central to fall back on she kept on the move, never staying more than a day or two in any town, and never taking a train anywhere preferring to ride horses and live off the land when she could, figuring it was the best way to stay out of sight, worried that if she was caught by the Military they would take her back to Central where she would be executed for running off. After all, there had already been one attempt on her life she didn’t want to risk another.
Abilities: She’s an alchemist with limited control over liquid water. Her control is based on how focused she is on the task at hand. In the middle of a fight she will call up a ‘whip’ or ‘sword’ made of water which can cut through bare flesh. She also is known to use water droplets much like bullets and cause spears of water if she needs to.
She keeps extra vials tucked into a brace that goes from her wrist to just under her elbow. Along with adding strength to her wounded arm it gives her hidden pockets to hide extra vials of water and herbs to use in a fight as well as hides half the array she uses to do her alchemy. Her gauntlet works much like Mustang’s gloves, only supplying water to her hand instead of calling up flames.
She has hand to hand combat training which she’ll use before her alchemy in a fight, most of the time she’ll try to use it before resorting to using one of her vials. That is if talking doesn’t work. Constance doesn’t like fighting without orders unless she’s attacked first.
Her healing skills are rudimentary at best; she can usually keep a patient alive until she can get them to a real healer. She will not use her alchemy for healing, not sure exactly how to pull it off, she has an idea of how it would work, she just hasn’t felt that there has been a situation where an attempt should be tried.
Personality: Constance even though she’s always watchful she loves fitting in with civilian crowds, it’s how she manages to stay hidden from the military most of the time. When she knows she can she loves to show off a little with her alchemy, using it to help when she can, be it helping to create wells for clean drinking water, or entertaining small children.
Even though she doesn’t like to fight she will put herself in harm’s way if she sees innocent people are about to get hurt. She may have been trained as an assassin but she hates the idea of lives being wasted in senseless violence. Constance has seen enough war in her life to know it doesn’t matter all life is precious, and she will fight to protect those who can’t.
She’s also loyal when it comes to those she befriends. If they need help she’ll be the first to reach her hand out to help, even if they don’t ask. Constance will also tell a friend they’re an idiot if she feels it’s what they need to hear. Sometimes she’ll follow it with a fist if they really deserve it.
While she acts strong she’s fragile on the inside, if she’s alone she’ll let the facade fall, the rare occasions she lets it fall in public it’s usually to draw a hit in closer. The last time she let the act fall it was visiting her parents’ graves. She promised them that she’d do her best to survive on her own. Being alone reminds her of the promise to her parents and the blood that stains her hands. Usually it’s about when she’ll pick up a bottle to try to drown the memories in.
